NTRP ↔ UTR converter

An approximate conversion between USTA NTRP levels and UTR, both directions. There is no official conversion, so we show a range and where it comes from.

NTRP to UTR converter: pick an NTRP level and gender to see the approximate UTR range. A men's 4.5 is about UTR 8–10 and a women's 4.5 about UTR 6–8 (USTA NorCal table); there is no official conversion.

Pick a level to convert

Results are approximate ranges. NTRP is gender-specific; UTR is one scale for everyone.

Approximate only. USTA and UTR Sports publish no official NTRP ↔ UTR conversion. Use this as a rough guide, and check your real rating at the source. Have a WTN? The WTN ↔ UTR converter uses research data.

Where the numbers come from

For NTRP 4.0 and up we use the conversion table published on the USTA Northern California section's website. It gives a UTR range for each NTRP level, separately for men and women. It is a section page, not national USTA policy.

The same page also lists a formula used by Tennis360: men's NTRP × 2.2, and (women's NTRP − 0.5) × 2.2. That formula gives higher numbers than the table, which shows how loose any conversion is. We use the table.

Below 4.0 the table has no rows, so we use a rule of thumb from a USTA league page: UTR is roughly twice your NTRP, minus 3. It is not split by gender.

Questions parents ask

Is there an official NTRP to UTR conversion?

No. USTA (which runs NTRP) and UTR Sports do not publish an official conversion. USTA says there is no direct one-to-one comparison between NTRP and WTN, and the same caution applies to UTR. This tool uses a table from a USTA section page and a rule of thumb, so treat every result as approximate.

Why are the UTR ranges different for men and women?

NTRP rates men and women separately, while UTR puts everyone on one scale. A women’s 4.5 and a men’s 4.5 are different levels, so they map to different UTR ranges: about 6–8 for women and 8–10 for men in the USTA NorCal table.

What UTR is a 3.5 NTRP?

Roughly UTR 4. The table we use starts at 4.0, so below that we use the rule of thumb "UTR is about twice your NTRP, minus 3" from a USTA league page. It does not split men and women.

Do juniors have an NTRP?

Usually not. NTRP is mainly for adult leagues; juniors use UTR and WTN. If your junior has a WTN, use our WTN ↔ UTR converter instead, which is based on research data.
