Most of the world’s best players started tennis at about age 5. We looked up all 200 players in the ATP and WTA singles top 100 (rankings of October 5, 2026). 151 of them have a start age in their tour bio, their own interviews or reputable press. Half of them started at 5 or younger. But 22 players, 15%, started at 7 or older, and 33 played another sport first.
If you are a tennis parent, the short version is this: an early start is common at the top, but it is not a rule. A start at 7, 8 or even 11 did not stop players who are in the top 100 today.
Youngest start: Thiago Agustin Tirante (9 months). Oldest start: Lorenzo Sonego (11).

The median is 5 on both tours, but the shape is different. 49% of the men started at 4 or younger, compared with 26% of the women. Most women in the top 100 started between 4 and 6. The men spread wider: more of them were hitting balls as toddlers, and the oldest starts are men too.
Who got them started
For most players, tennis was a family thing. We know who introduced 123 of the players to the game. A parent did for 100 of them (81%). An older brother or sister did for 20, and a grandparent for 8. Many of the parents were coaches or club players, and some were former pros.
That matters when you read the start ages. A child whose father runs the local tennis club holds a racquet at 3 because the racquet is there. It does not mean every child needs to start at 3.
Late starters and multi-sport kids
These two lists are the most useful part of the data for many parents.

- Jannik Sinner · alpine skiing, soccer · tennis only from 13
- Flavio Cobolli · soccer · tennis only from 13
- Matteo Arnaldi · swimming, skiing, football, judo · tennis only from 12
Some examples:
- Ben Shelton (No. 4) started at 10. He played quarterback before he focused on tennis.
- Lorenzo Sonego started at 11, the oldest start in the top 100, and reached a career high of 21.
- Jannik Sinner started at 7. He was an Italian junior ski champion from 8 to 12 and chose tennis only at 13.
- Flavio Cobolli (No. 7) played youth football for AS Roma until 13 before he chose tennis.
Sport scientists often advise children to try more than one sport until the early teens. The players above show that late specialization can still lead to the top of the game.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz
The two players who win most of the big titles show the range.
- Jannik Sinner: Jannik Sinner began playing tennis at age 7, inspired by his father, and was a champion junior skier before choosing tennis at 13. See his profile.
- Carlos Alcaraz: Carlos Alcaraz began playing tennis at age 4, thanks to his father. See his profile.
What this means for your child
The start age tells you little about the future of a 10-year-old. Coaching, match play, physical growth and, above all, love of the game matter more. Here is what we take from the data:
- Do not panic about a “late” start. 22 players in today’s ATP and WTA top 100 started at 7 or older.
- Other sports are not wasted time. 5 players chose tennis only at 12 or older, after years of skiing, football or other sports.
- Compare level, not start age. A better guide is how your child plays for their age. See what a good UTR is at each age and the USTA age group calculator.
- Make it easy to play. Most pros had a racquet and a court close to home. Our guide for new tennis parents shows how to start.

How we built this list
We took the ATP and WTA singles top 100 of the week of October 5, 2026. For each player we read the tour bio first, then the player’s own interviews and reputable press. We did not use fan wikis or celebrity-biography sites. If a source gives a range (“3 or 4”), the table and the median use the lower number. When sources disagree, the profile says so. A dash means we found no reliable source. We checked the facts on October 18, 2026. See an error? Tell us.
Questions parents ask
At what age do most professional tennis players start?
In our data, the median start age of the ATP and WTA top 100 is 5. 65% started at 5 or younger, and 15% started at 7 or older. 151 of 200 players have a sourced start age.
Do men and women start at different ages?
Men (ATP): median 5 (86 players with a sourced age). Women (WTA): median 5 (65 players with a sourced age).
Is it too late for my child to start tennis at 8 or 10?
Not for enjoying the sport or playing in college. 22 players in today's top 100 started at 7 or older, including Lorenzo Sonego, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Sebastian Korda. Most top pros start younger, but the start age is one factor among many: coaching, match play and love of the game matter more.
Did the top players play other sports as kids?
